Little Mary and the Picnic Surprise

Little Mary was out in the woods one sunny morning. She had been looking forward to this moment for the whole semester, and finally, the school break had come. For the first time ever, her parents allowed her to go on a picnic with her friends—without a guardian!

Her dad had bought her a new picnic basket yesterday, and her mom made delicious sandwiches early that morning. Mary was so excited to hit the road. She skipped down the path to meet Fatima, who lived at the end of the road, and together they headed into the woods to have a picnic with the pixies.

At the woods, they laid down the picnic mat and placed all the food and drinks on it, waiting for the pixies to arrive. But instead of pixies, a forlorn kangaroo appeared. It looked so sad and lost—like it hadn’t seen its mom in days.

“Can I join you for the picnic?” the kangaroo asked with a tiny sniffle.

“Of course! You’re welcome,” said Mary kindly.

The kangaroo was so excited that it made an epic mistake—it jumped onto the mat to sit like the girls but accidentally squashed the sandwiches! Tomatoes, lettuce, tuna, eggs, and bacon flew everywhere.

Mary stared at the mess with her big, round eyes, and tears began to fall. Now that the food was ruined, what could she share with her friends for lunch?

Before she could even ask Fatima for help, a koala dropped from the eucalyptus tree above them and caused even more of a rampage—knocking over drinks and fruit that Fatima had packed.

But this was no ordinary koala. It had a monkey’s tail and was squirmy, never staying still, tumbling and rolling across the picnic mat. The girls were upset. They took exception to the koala’s wild behavior.

Suddenly, the pixies timed their arrival perfectly and appeared in a swirl of sparkles—just in time to witness the chaos. With a flick of her wand, the head pixie pointed at the koala. “Stop!” she said. The koala froze instantly—it had gone cold turkey from all its wiggling and squirming.

Then, with another flick and the words, “Abracadabra!”, a beautiful dining table appeared in front of them. It was filled with sweet cakes, sandwiches, fruits, and all of Mary’s favorite foods. Mary was amazed. She turned to thank the pixie and said, “You’re amazing!” The pixie smiled. “When trouble comes, sometimes you just have to defer to a little magic,” she said with a wink.

The girls, the kangaroo, and the koala came out against sadness that day and chose joy instead. They ate, sang, danced, and laughed together—happily ever after.
